A Prayer When You Need God to Fight for You
By Rachel Wojo, host of the Untangling Prayer podcast

Bible Reading:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” - Exodus 14:14

Listen or Read Below:

The phone call came while my teenage son was walking home from school. His voice sounded shaky, and I knew immediately that he was scared. My thoughts jumped quickly to the worst scenario, but I tried to stay calm. Then he said, “I have large dark spots in my eyes. I can’t see; I’m losing my eyesight.”

I dropped everything and rushed the van a little way down the road to pick him up.   My husband met me at the ophthalmologist’s office. The doctor took one look and sent my husband and son directly to the emergency room. There was no time for additional childcare, and I had to stay home with our other children.

I have never felt so helpless in my life. The battle for my son’s sight was happening in a hospital across town, and there was nothing I could do but wait and pray. Lord, protect him. Whatever this is, may it be temporary. Over and over, that was my prayer.

In the midst of that helplessness, I felt the Holy Spirit speak to my heart: "Trust God with your son. He is large and in charge.” It wasn’t a loud, dramatic moment. It was a quiet settling in my heart, a reminder that the battle I couldn’t fight wasn’t mine to fight anyway.

But I remember thinking about all the what-ifs. What if it wasn’t temporary? What if this were something serious, something permanent? I couldn’t fix it, couldn’t research my way out of it, couldn’t even be in the room. Some battles are just too big for us. And I think that’s exactly the place where God shows up.

The Israelites understood this kind of helplessness. In Exodus 14, they were trapped at the edge of the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army bearing down behind them. There was no path forward. They didn’t have an escape route. The battle looked impossible because it was for them.

Moses told them, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” And then came the promise: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Be still. Whether you’re in the middle of a crisis, in the waiting room, or washing dishes in the kitchen, you can still rest your heart in God’s plan.

Are you in one of those battles right now? The kind where you’ve already exhausted every option and still have no answers? Friend, when the enemy feels larger than your strength, God has not left you to figure it out on your own. When the diagnosis is bigger than your resources, God has not forgotten you. In the heat of the battle is where He always shows up and often shows off.

God doesn’t just offer to help us fight. He owns the battle entirely. He doesn’t need our strategy or our strength. He asks for our stillness and our trust.

My son’s vision returned within a couple of days. The doctors determined he’d experienced an ocular migraine. He started taking better care of his body, drinking more water, paying attention to his health, and in the decade since, he’s only had one other ocular migraine.

I’m so grateful for that day when I felt God fight for him.

Friend, He’s fighting for you, too.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

I bring You the battle I cannot win on my own. The situation that feels too big, the enemy that feels too close, and the fear that is trying to convince me that I am alone in this fight. But Your Word tells me something different.

Lord, You will fight for me. I don’t have to figure this out or force a solution. I don’t have to exhaust myself trying to control what I was never meant to carry. You are large and in charge, and You own this battle completely.

Teach me what it means to be still—not giving up, but trusting that You’re already at work in what I can’t yet see. When fear tries to rise, quiet my heart with the reminder that You are fighting for me.

Thank You that I don’t have to face this alone. You are my defender, my deliverer, and my God.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In this episode of Talk About That, you will laugh along with stories about children’s books, volleyball mornings, St. Patrick’s Day, and even the questionable legacy of the Power Team, but underneath the humor is a thoughtful conversation about one of the deepest questions of faith: how God truly sees us. John and Jonnie reflect on weakness, mercy, and the struggle many believers feel in accepting that God is not only patient with them, but genuinely pleased to call them His own. It’s an honest, encouraging reminder that our relationship with God is not built on performance, perfection, or “having it all together,” but on His love, grace, and fatherly delight in His children. You'll come away challenged to see yourself less through the lens of self-criticism and more through the steady, compassionate eyes of a God who knows you fully, loves you deeply, and may just be rooting for you more than you realize.
