When You Feel Like God Let You Down
By Sabrina McDonald

“I did everything,” she said. “I prayed, fasted, went to church. And I feel like God let me down.”

Ever feel like that? Maybe your marriage isn’t working. Or maybe you’ve faced a devastating tragedy. You pray and obey all the good Christian rules, and nothing changes.

I’ve been there.

When my first husband was killed in a car crash at 37 years old, I wondered, “What if I never sense God’s favor again? Will I still worship Him?”

Loving God is easy until it requires believing without seeing.

But that’s faith—choosing to trust God, even when everything we see tells us not to. It’s impossible to please God without it (Hebrews 11:6). That means we have to follow Him, even when it looks like He’s leading into darkness.

Naturally, we want to resist. All we see from our point of view is heartbreak, tragedy, and fear.

But God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

What we see as darkness—even in a tough marriage—is really a hidden cave of wealth. As God directs our steps, we have the choice to pick up a cache of treasure along the way. And when we come out into the light on the other side, we’ll see what we thought were boulders on our back were really gold, silver, and precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:11-13).

So, while suffering through the darkness of your situation, keep hanging on to faith. Look to the future. God has precious blessings in store for you!

Even when you don’t feel you can trust your spouse, you can trust God.

The good stuff: Though he slay me, I will hope in him. (Job 13:15)

Action points: Remember the ways God has blessed you through previous difficult situations. Read the book of Job to see how one man endured multiple tragedies and still held onto his faith. Make a list of ways God may be using this current difficult time to bless you in the future.
