“My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” - Psalm 73:26
Watching my oldest daughter walk out of my line of sight and onto her college campus for the first time was hard. It felt hard to breathe, wrong to leave, and hard to turn that page. I didn’t stand there that day on my own strength. I don’t have that kind of strength. Psalm 73 met me in a somber moment to remind me that, thankfully, I don’t have to turn the page on this season of life and stand there watching my best little friend walk away in my own strength. God propped me up …guided even breaths back into their normal rhythm and sat with me every time I broke down in tears.
As I get older, I’m keenly aware of failing health, weak physicality, and the toll emotional waves take, and the time required to recover. Rest seems to take on a new definition these days. I peek back to a couple of decades ago, when my run was done in time to watch the sun rise over the lake. When I had endless energy to roll my babies around in their little red wagon as we giggled and laughed through their childhood. Now, as my oldest is off and my youngest is close behind her, everything is shifting. There is so much life left to live, but it will be starkly different from the season I am walking out of.
I hope you hold onto this Psalm as I do …sometimes for dear life …other times as a reminder that I’m not alone. God doesn’t need our strength. He requires our submission. Handing our lives over to Him. What does that mean? When my spirit feels weak and worn out, I look around at the photos that line the walls of my house. Everywhere, frames are collecting dust. Every time I pick up my phone, my lock screen reminds me …as long as there are people in my life, there will be things to do, souls to love and serve, and new seasons to walk through.
Even good change can be extremely difficult. Though she’s across the country, my daughter is living in the place God has set on her heart, studying in the field He has called her to impact. I can attest that it is possible to feel happiness and sadness all at once, and I have to imagine this is what joy is. The steady confidence in the waves of emotion holds me up and carries me through. God is faithful to set me on the path that will move me forward into the next thing He has for me. There will always be something …always be people to love and serve. But on the day when my health fails, and my spirit feels weak, I count on God, my strength.
What season of life are you in right now, and how are you experiencing God’s strength?
Let’s pray …
Father,
Thank you for this season of life. Even though it’s hard to let go of the last one, and I still feel a little stuck between it and what’s next …I know who you are, and you never change. You will always be my strength and source of joy. I don’t have to tell you when I’m sad because you know everything about me …every day of my life. You know when I am vulnerable and weak, and in those times, you always step in to support my weight. When I feel too weak to stand, walk away, or move forward, you are there to remind me of the joy that remains in every season of life. You are the strength of my heart, God. When everything else in my life seems to make no sense, you do. You are there, and you meet me every day with the encouragement I need to survive, to walk into the next season, and to thrive there …for your glory. There’s no way I stand here intact, in any season, without you. You are not just my God, you are my best friend, my everything, the breath in my lungs, and the only one who truly knows me. Help me to bring glory to your name in this season and every season, each and every day.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
